Barking Collars

Citronella Spray Bark Collars are a humane and gentle way to deter your dog from barking.  The way these spray bark collars work is that when your dog barks the collar responds by emitting a mist towards the snout of your dog.  Your dog will quickly associate the sensations of the collar with his barking,  The citronella spray bark collars give a citronella or scentless mist, your dog responds to the smell (citronella), the feeling of the mist on their fur and the sound of the collar activating.

It usually takes a dog around 3 days to associate the spray with their barking.  In the 3 or 4 days following that, your dog will then work out that this all started when the collar was introduced.  It is at this stage that the collar goes from being just a consequence to barking, to being a deterrent to barking, and a consequence should the collar be challenged.

When selecting a citronella spray bark collar, please carefully read the product features, as some of these spray collars are waterproof, and others are water resistant, some are activated by both vibration and sound, others are just sound activated (great for howling and whining, but not where there is more than one dog on the property.  This is a great option for pet dogs that are barking.

If you have a younger dog, or a timid and responsive dog, it is worth looking at the Ultrasonic or Vibration anti bark collars.  The ultrasonic anti bark collar emits an ultrasonic tone when the dog wearing the collar barks.  Though you and I can't hear it, it is an unpleasent sound to dogs. Alternatively, the vibration anti bark collar uses 10 varying vibration configurations to distract young dogs or puppies from barking.  Both of these anti bark collars can have great results with younger dogs or dogs with timid temperaments.  However, for the most part, we find adult dogs respond better to the citronella spray bark collars.

It is also important to note that the above types of ultrasonic, vibration and spray collars are not always successful, particularly with dogs that are a working breed, if you think your dog fits this description, or you believe your dog may be too head strong for a citronella spray bark collar, please contact Bark Control Australia for further expert advice.
