The Benefits of Pet Ownership

The decision to get an additional (furry) family member is a big one. While it might be a little easier to look after a pet than a baby – it is still a big responsibility. So once you’ve made the decision to adopt a new cat or dog – what are the benefits?

Companionship

While dogs are known as man’s best friend, cats are pretty great too. In fact all pets offer some form of companionship. This can have some great psychological benefits including: higher self-esteem, lower rates of loneliness and a stronger ability to cope with grief and stress.

They look after us when we are sick

Pets are also great caregivers, keeping us company when we are sick or feeling down. They can also make us feel safe while we’re home alone and they keep an eye on the house while we’re out providing us with peace of mind.

Better health

It might come as a surprise, but owning a pet has some great health benefits as well. Increased cardiovascular health, a higher level of physical activity and fewer visits to the doctor are just a few of the health benefits reported by pet owners.
