The PetSafe Ultrasonic Indoor Bark Deterrent, is a standalone device that emits a ultrasonic tone  when the device detects barking.
 

The microphone on the indoor unit picks up the sound of your dog's barking, emitting an ultrasonic tone that can be heard by your dog. Startled by the high pitch tone, your dog should stop barking and associate the unpleasant tone with the sound of their barking.
