How Much Sleep Do Our Pets Really Need?

Ensuring your pet has quality sleep is just as important as a healthy diet and regular exercise. The amount of sleep your dog or cat needs depends on their breed, age, size, general health, and wellness. On average, dogs sleep for around 12-14 hours a day, while cats can sleep for up to 16-20 hours a day!

Cats

Cats are either lazy or SUPER energetic. There is no in-between! So why do cats sleep for such extended periods? Well, because they can! Cats in the wild need to hunt their prey by stalking and chasing to eat, which burns A LOT of energy. Sleeping helps their body conserve energy between meals. Even though we give our pets the food they need, they still have the instincts to chase and pounce on things that interest them!

Dogs

On average, dogs will sleep 12-14 hours a day. Large breeds, puppies and senior dogs can sleep up to 18 hours daily! Larger dogs like St Bernards, Great Danes and Bull Mastiffs tend to just be really lazy, making them surprisingly ideal apartment dogs. On the other hand, puppies and senior dogs need decent sleep for healthy body development.

Humans

Studies show that, like humans, sleep deprivation in pets can lead to adverse effects, including; aggression, a cranky temperament, change in eating habits, lack of concentration and an increased chance of illness and nervousness.
